We welcome those of you who are new= to the Blue Devil Family, and welcome back those who have been associated with= the program for many years. You a= nd your family are part of a unique group that enables your child to grow musically and socially. We ho= pe that you will take the opportunity to join the Band Support Organization and offer your support to the Band and Color Guard programs.<= /p>

The Varina High School Band program= is on pursuit to be one of the most highly acclaimed programs in Virginia and has a history for its pur= suit and display of excellence and high achievement. The success and prestige of= the program is brought about by hard work on the part of all concerned--the Dir= ectors, the booster members', supporting family members, and especially, the studen= ts.

You probably have some questions ab= out how the band program works. T= his guidebook attempts to answer as many questions as possible--"When does= it happen? Who does what? How much does it cost? And especially, HOW CAN I HELP?= 221; The information herein is correct = as far as we know at this time. Any changes are published on the band website, which will be completed in late September 2009. Parents are a= lso notified of changes and other important items via the Band Director, general e-mail, and at general membership meetings. Your students are also kept up = to date on important issues through the Band Director so please be sure to have discussions with your student about the schedule.

During summer Marching Band rehears= al each August, please look for the Band Event schedule and BSO contact list to be given out. This handout is created yearly and is for parents (you might wan= t to make a copy for your child). = The directory not only has all the names and phone numbers of the Executive Boa= rd members but also a calendar of all planned band events for the year. This will be sent home with your b= and student so ask your child for it during the start of regular Marching Band rehearsal.

Parents are welcome at all events (= no matter what you might hear from your own child). In fact, it's parent attendance th= at generates the excitement at events, fundraisers, competitions, and concerts. The students work t= oo hard to be ignored, and they deserve our utmost support. =

Come to the home football games and= sit with us. (Band families gener= ally sit on either side of the band on the home side -that’s usually around the 30-yard line.) It's not h= ard to find us. There are a lot of B= lue/Gold in this part of the crowd.

Band ^{Support Organization}

The VARINA BAND SUPPORT ORGANIZATION (BSO) is a non-profit public charity entity in the <= st1:PlaceType w:st=3D"on">Commonwealth of Vir= ginia to provide financial and organizational support to the band and color guard programs, their Directors, and the school they represent. Volunteer activities are organized= and promoted by the Executive Board and committee chairpersons. See the “Parent Volunteer Opportunities” section of this handbook for some of the many ways you= can support the Band Booster programs.

Membership in the BSO is open to an= y interested persons. Membership entitles you to participate in all booster-sponsored activities, to attend free of charge the scheduled band concerts at Varina = High School, and to vote on all issues brought before the organization at meetin= gs of the General Membership.

General Membership = Meetings are held monthly, generally the first Tuesdays of the month, and the Execut= ive Board meeting meets at 6:30 p.m. followed by the General Membership meeting which begins at approximately 7:30 p.m. These meetings provide the membersh= ip with an opportunity to meet other band parents, the current members of the Executive Board and Committees, and the Band Directors. It is an opportunity to ask questi= ons on any band subject. The meetings last about one hour, are held in the band ro= om at Varina= High School, and are advertised in advance via email, and on the website. Additional meetings may be required based on time-sensitive decisions which will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

^Programs

Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band consists of advanced wind and percussion players. Membership is by audition or consultation with the Director of Ban= ds. The Symphonic Band repertoire consists of quality original works specifical= ly written for this level. The Symphonic Band is designed as the sequential st= udy of instrumental music literature and advanced rehearsal and performance techniques. After-school rehearsals and performances are a requirement. The band will prepare for concerts, festivals, and various competitions. Member= ship requires total dedication with maximum effort and involvement in all aspect= s of playing and performance, and requires high achievement and talent.= Gra= des are determined from the Grading and Attendance Policy outlined later in this handbook.

Concert Band

The Concert Band consists of beginning to intermediate players= and is a preparatory class for Wind Ensemble. Membership does not require auditio= n or consultation but can be done to be considered higher in the band chairs. Concert Band will prepare for concerts and festivals. They will also have t= he occasional after school band or sectional practices. Concert band c= lass is designed for the study of beginning to intermediate instrumental music literature in addition to rehearsal and performance techniques. Grades are determined from the Grading and Attendance Policy outlined later in this handbook. Membership is broken into 2 Classes= ,

Bra= ss 9234 B

All students who play a brass instrument will be placed in this class. This course is designed to reinforce and give more individualized instruction to the brass family.

Woo= dwinds 9234 W

All students who play a brass instrument will be placed in this class. This course is designed to reinforce and give more individualized instruction to the brass family.

Note: these classes have approximately 8 total after school commitments.

Percussion Ensemble 9234 P

The percussion ensemble is an Audit= ion only ensemble that is open to students who participat= e in the marching band only. This Course is designed to teach, and reinforce all aspects of the percussive arts from Marching, Concert and World Drumming. T= he first Unit is dedicated to the Marching Arts and is used as a propellant for the marching band and transitions to the VHS indoor Drum line. The second u= nit focuses on mallet technique and skills. The third unit focuses on all conce= rt percussion and full wind ensemble playing. The Percussion ensemble will accompany the ADV Honors wind ensemble AND the Concert band. Students will = be notified of band they will be associated with by the director at his discretion. It is expected that students follow same schedule as what ever ensemble they are associated with during concert season. During winter mont= hs a Full Indoor drum line schedule will be released.

Students will be graded on participation, show music, Physical strength Training (due to the physical nature of percussion), 26 Standard Rudiments, 6 hybrid rudiments, Warm ups. Practice routine/log, all 12 Major scales quizzes, tests and attendance. If attendance becomes a issue the Director for the benefit of the group will h= ave the right to remove student from activity if commitment from student/parent= is not fulfilled.

Beginning in March Placement for the following years Outdoor drum line will begin. Placement is at the Sole discretion of the director/percussion staff. Through a laboratory style audition process. The best Chemistry line will be set and Announced at the = May 15^th Concert

This class has numerous afterschool commitments, If you cannot commit to such you student will be removed from class or receive a non-passing grade.

Jazz Ensemble

The jazz ensemble is an integral part of the overall band prog= ram and consists of the following band instrumentation: Drum set, Electric guit= ar, Bass guitar, Piano, Trumpets, Trombones, and Saxophones. A serious effort is made to promote the growth and performance of jazz and related styles of mu= sic. Membership for the ensemble is determined by audition or consultation with = the Director of Bands. Performance includes concerts, Jazz festivals, and other= performances as scheduled by the Director. The Jazz Band is a select performing group that meets= as a separate class after the school day.&nbs= p; Membership is by audition and concurrent membership in a performing group Symphonic band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band etc, is required.

Marching Band

The Marching Band is an extra-curricular musical marching unit mainly organized= for the duration of the football season. The Marching Band is involved in creat= ing a field show for competitions, for entertainment at football games, and oth= er community activities. Students wishing to be considered for membership must complete and submit an application to the Director. The selection process w= ill include an audition and/or consultation with the Band Director. Alternates = may be selected at the discretion of the Director. Marching Band members are required to attend the summer band camp. It is not necessary for a student = to be enrolled in the instrumental program in order to participate in Color Guard, and the Director can at his discretion for necessary academic conflicts allow participation without enrollment in instrumental or choral music programs . The Marching Band can= be composed of members of the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Bands, and the Color Guard. The Marching= Band maintains an extensive performance and competition schedule in the fall quarter. The season begins wi= th mandatory Summer Marching Band Rehearsal and requires after-s= chool rehearsals through the end of football season (usually, but not limited to, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays). In addition, section leaders can call mandatory sectional rehearsals outside of school or band rehear= sal hours. They can be on a regul= ar schedule or on an “as needed” basis in order to address problem= s in marching, color guard drill, or music performance. All of these commitments are part = of the band course. A portion of expenses for competitions (excluding Bowl Games) = and festivals in the fall and winter are paid by the individual band members an= d are included in the application fee which is collected during summer marching b= and rehearsal. The Summer Marchin= g Band Rehearsal fee is collected in the month of May preceding the start of summer rehearsal. For more informati= on, see specific headings in this guide.

Color Guard=

The Color Guard functions as an essential part of the Marching Band. Auditions are held each spring. The Color Guard rehearses approxim= ately ten times throughout the summer and then follows the Marching Band rehearsal schedule. Color Guard members= and families support the BSO during the concert season and in turn also receive= the whole-hearted support of the band and band parents at these times. During Spring Guard season, Color = Guard captains will notify your students of their practice times. Throughout the marching band and c= oncert seasons, the high school Band Director communicates with the Color Guard Captains to keep them informed of any issues relating to the other general = band activities that other band members find out about in band class. (In this way the captains are able= to relay information to Color Guard members and parents).

Several types of fu= nd raising activities occur each year. The Band Boosters sponsor several activities to provide operating capital for their support functions. Students and parents of all bands and color guard are encouraged to = take part. The members of and types of fundraisers may vary from year to year.

Tag Day

Tag Day is the major fund-raising event for the Band. All students are required to participate. Tag Day is held very early on afte= r Band Camp. Check the calendar on the Band Website for exact date and other detai= ls. The time is usually 8:00 a.m. to approximately 4:00 p.m. Your student must participate for the entire time. Students, in groups with a chaperone-driver, travel from house to house in the = Varina High school<= /st1:PlaceType> district and ask for tax-deductible donations.

Students wear their= band uniforms. Many volunteers are needed prior to and on Tag Day to help with this event. Parents are needed to drive (drive= rs must be over 21 years of age--no exceptions), to volunteer donating snacks = and to help with other areas. The high school cafeteria is where all internal activity is located and where groups are assigned and the day begins. This is where breakfast, snacks and beverages are served to the students and volunteer drivers and monies are dropped off to be tallied. Af= ter collections are turned in at the end of the day, everyone enjoys pizza and soft drinks = to celebrate a job well done. Tag Day is extremely important to the success of the band program and volunteers are needed in many areas.

Car Washes

The Student Band of= ficers sponsor and arrange car washes that occur throughout the year. The exact dates are published in t= he summer newsletter, and on the band website TBD. The car washes = are usually held in the Varina area locations.= All band and guard members are encouraged to participate. Funds raised go into the BSO gener= al fund. Students can earn a letter point if they attend all car washes and as= sist with fundraisers in general.

BSO Spaghetti Dinner

This is another fundraiser sponsored by the BSO = to give students a chance to earn money to offset band expenses.

Fr= uit Sales

The Varina High School District loo= ks forward to the band’s fruit sales Orders are taken a month prior to delivery. Delivery day requir= es parent volunteers and students to help deliver deserts. Students and family members are re= quired (regardless of weather) to pic= k up their orders at the school by 5:00 p.m. on delivery day. Prices for the deserts vary from y= ear to year based on choice of deserts. Students earn a percentage of funds per each item sold (depending on the total number of boxes sold by all band members), and this money goes directly into their individual accounts. Co= mplete details for each sale, along with order forms and tally sheets, are sent ho= me with each student 4 to 6 weeks before the delivery date. Parents, ask for them in late Octo= ber if you haven't seen them. A full explanation of fruit sales is given at the October Band Booster meeting.

Gas Card Giveaway (Year round)

Students and their = families can earn funds by purchasing an opportunity to win a gas card that can be u= sed at a local gas station. This = is done a few times a year in which we give away a gift card for gas based on = the students selling the opportunity to win.

Spring Yard Sale

Students and Parent= s can bring things from home or purchase things that they may wish to sell toward making additional funds for the band program.

Students are asked to sell advertisements to go in our concert programs and 50% goes directly into the students account.

^{Summer Marching Band Rehearsal (August)}

Summer Marching Band Rehearsal is required for all members of the Marching Band and Color Guard. It is held in the Driver’s Ed lot at Varina high school during the 2 wee= ks before the start of school. A= $250 per student fee for Summer Marching Band Rehearsal is charged and collected= at the end of the preceding school year or at registration for students enroll= ing during the summer. Please Do = not plan vacations during august because it will not be excused.

The hours for the summer band rehea= rsal are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m with a 2 hour break and then 6-9 p.m.. for everyo= ne, Monday through Friday. (Occasionally, marching band practices can run a lit= tle longer than this.) Members of= the Color Guard and percussion section are required to meet an additional week immediately preceding summer Marching Band Rehearsal. Generally, rehears= als take place outside during the morning and indoors during the afternoon. Students will need a lunch and a container of water.. The sche= dule includes both indoor and outdoor practices, sectional rehearsals, and a lun= ch break. SUMMER MARCHING BAND REHEAR= SAL IS MANDATORY! Students Are not allowed to leave campus for lunch. Please do not schedule vacations, appointments, etc. that will conflict.

Some of you may have heard rumors a= bout how rigorous band marching rehearsal is.&n= bsp; It is a time for your child to really focus on the essentials of marching band. Varina High School has a Henrico County and State reputation becaus= e it can do two things at the same time--march and play well. Your child will be learning diffic= ult music and difficult marching drills. This takes time and attention. Your child should have a good breakfast before leaving each day for = band rehearsal. Experienced studen= ts bring coolers with lunch and a separate container for ice water. Those in the know avoid all sweete= ned beverages on the blacktop--they attract yellow jackets and wasps! Please make sure your child wears = sun block. We do not want = any student to become seriously ill with severe sunburn. The more experienced students wear hats. All marchers must wear shoes and socks--sandals are not allowed!

All the hard work of rehearsals pays off in spectacular performances. You can't believe how many people = from so many different places look forward to seeing your children perform. Marching Band is fun and rewarding= . At most schools, people leave for = the snack bar at half time. This = is not so at Varina High School. The football parents = and students are cheering your chi= ldren at half time and our kids take a break during the third quarter. Band Boosters from schools all ove= r the region look forward to seeing your children perform at competitions. We also participate in other functions such as local parades as well as other miscellaneous functions like store openings etc…… .<= /span>

Opportunities}

Volunteer opportunities are available in the areas listed below. In many cases, hours can be flexib= le to accommodate your schedule. Yo= ur involvement can be ongoing or on a one-time basis. The success of the Varina High School<= /st1:PlaceType> band program depends on you. = If anyone who would like to help in any fashion but does not know where help m= ight be needed, he or she is more than welcome to call the BSO President, or any other band officer or committee chair at any time. Every year we need new volunteers to shadow senior pare= nts in key volunteer positions. T= his helps ensure a smooth transition each spring.

There are six Board= Member positions (President Emeritus, President; Vice President; Secretary; Treasu= rer and Member at large) that require an extra amount of time, leadership and o= ther skills. Elections are held in= the spring in May.

Fundraising

There are multiple opportunities to assist with fundraising and all volunteers are needed. Please contact the fundraising chairperson or anyone on the Executi= ve Board if you are interested in assisting. Please see listing of fundraising events within handbook.

Chaperones

Chaperones are need= ed to accompany the band on the bus for any trips away from school grounds and at= all football games (See attached Competition checklist). Chaperones remain with the band up= until the time they perform. Chaperones are not charged for transportation but are responsible for their own food and personal expenses. For overnight trips, chaperones wi= ll be responsible for specific students and will assist them for the duration of = the trip. Chaperones are expected to bear the cost of their room and food gener= ally less than students costs. All chaperone accommodations on overnight trips are “double occupancyR= 21;.

Communication

The Membership comm= ittee chairperson collects band reminder items from the directors, board members = and chairpersons, and writes reminder mass e-mails to all band families as need= ed.

Middle School Band Liaison

A parent volunteer = is the liaison between the middle school bands and the high school bands. The liaison will plan and organize= two activities during the school year. During the marching band season the liaison works directly with the = band directors to plan an event for the eighth grade students to join with the marching band during a home game and experience first hand what the marching band is all about. The liaiso= n is also responsible for coordinating the reception following the Spring Concer= t at the school.

Pit/Percussion Crew

Pit crew assists in transporting large equipment (percussion instruments) to and from home foot= ball games and competition sites, and positioning for use on the field at the ti= me of performance as well as loading and unloading or Pit trailer. The Pit Crew helps in the repair, maintenance, and construction of equipment and carts when needed. Pit Crew help is also needed for s= ome concert band performances.

Uniforms

Volunteers help with fitting, hemming, repairing zippers, and distributing and receiving uniforms during Summer Marching Band Rehearsal and immediately before and after football games, contests, concerts, and trips.=

Talking disrupts rehearsal, wastes everybody’s time, and
prevents the ensemble from excelling. Disruptive behavior will result in one
warning. After that, disciplinary action will be taken.

Beginning in January ADV Honors Wind ensemble will have mandatory
rehearsals from 4:15-6:45 on Monday or Thursday evenings on a rotating basis
running through VBODA State festival in mid-late March.

The week prior to VBODA festival we will have 2-3 (M-W-F) after sch=
ool
rehearsals if necessary held at the same times. This will help our students be as
successful as possible. Students will receive full grade plus 10% and points
toward band letter for perfect attendance of ALL Winter/Spring rehearsals. =

schedule will be released in December, We will make every effort to work wi=
th
all sports, All handbook policies are in effect.

If a student fails to attend rehearsals student will not be allowed=
to
perform at VBODA state festival. It is simply unfair to the 45 students of =
the
advanced Honors group. This is a performance based class and 50% of Final G=
rade
is factored from VBODA performance, If student misses, or is not allowed to
perform because of unexcused absences, student will earn a failing grade for
the course.

Students who earn less than a 70% on more than 2 playing tests betw=
een
January and March will lose their right to perform at VBODA state festival,=
but
must still attend event and will receive grade.}}
